Langmuir monolayers as disordered solids: Strain-state calculations applied to stearic acid

چکیده
Langmuir monolayers as disordered solids: Strain-state calculations applied to stearic acid" (1997). This paper presents a calculational procedure to determine the equilibrium phase for a given surface pressure . The monolayer is treated as orientationally free tails grafted to a two-dimensional net formed by the head groups of the amphiphilic molecules. The head groups form a subsystem with translational degrees of freedom characterized by strain variables in the plane of the surface, and the tail groups compose a subsystem characterized by rotational degrees of freedom. The order in the monolayer derives indirectly from the crystalline head groups through translational–rotational coupling. A stress–strain relation is derived which shows the energetically most favorable path for reorientation of the molecules due to a two-dimensional strain. This set of strain states for a given symmetry ͑phase͒ allows a contribution to the strain-state partition function to be computed. It is then straightforward to calculate the strain-state contribution to the free energy for a given phase and estimate the transition temperature between phases.

Langmuir monolayers as disordered solids: Strain-tilt-backbone coupling and natural order parameters for the swiveling transitions
Langmuir monolayers as disordered solids: Strain-tilt-backbone coupling and natural order parameters for the swiveling transitions" (1999). Multistability of Langmuir monolayers, in particular those composed of fatty acids, is reflected by a very rich and complicated phase diagram. We argue that strain-tilt-backbone coupling determines the behavior described by that diagram. Following the solid...
متن کاملStructure of a Langmuir film on a liquid metal surface.
The structure of organic monolayers on liquid surfaces depends sensitively on the details of the molecular interactions. The structure of a stearic acid film on a mercury surface was measured as a function of coverage with angstrom resolution. Unlike monolayers on water, the molecules were found here to undergo a transition from surface-parallel to surface-normal orientation with increasing cov...
متن کاملStability of stearic acid monolayers on artificial sea water
We studied the formation and stability of Stearic Acid (SA) based films on aqueous sub-phases via Langmuir trough and imaging ellipsometry experiments. The aqueous phase was based on Artificial Sea Water (ASW), a multicomponent salt solution with a total molarity of 0.53. The composition of this 10 solution was varied via dilution (1, 10 and 100 times) and adjustment of the pH (3, 7, 10). Also ...
متن کاملGrowth and Dissolution of Calcite in the Presence of Adsorbed Stearic Acid.
The interaction of organic molecules with the surface of calcite plays a central role in many geochemical, petrochemical, and industrial processes and in biomineralization. Adsorbed organics, typically fatty acids, can interfere with the evolution of calcite when immersed in aqueous solutions. Here we use atomic force microscopy in liquid to explore in real-time the evolution of the (1014) surf...
